Childcare Resources & Support

Living in the National Capital Region, childcare is extremely expensive and difficult to access. Unfortunately, using the School-Age Centers through the U.S. Army Child, Youth, & School Services was not available nor a viable option due to our needs. We have always participated in these programs at previous installations, but just like most things in this area, there is a greater demand than supply! But, we still needed care if both my husband and I were going to work.

Our oldest son phased out of needing care, but our youngest still needed before and after school services. With my husband frequently traveling, and my commute to work being almost an hour and a half, we wanted to have quality care close to our home. We also didn’t want to break the bank to pay for it! We are so thankful for the Army Fee Assistance Program administered by the Child Care Aware of America (CCAOA). We pay the DoD-established parent fees that we would pay on post and the Army Fee Assistance Subsidy pays up to a provider rate cap of $1500 per child per month! It is the best of both worlds!

Mission Response:

Thank you for sharing this wonderful resource, Robyn. Childcare can be a major expense for many military families. The Child Development Center (CDC) on your installation may be a good place to start. This article from MilitaryOneSource provides information the types of care that may be available on your installation.

Two great resources available to military families are:

  • Child Care Aware of America – This organization partners with the DoD to provide fee assistance to military families, click here for more information and links to your branch of service.
  • MilitaryChildCare.com – This DoD resource allows you to create a Household Profile account and search for care based on your needs and location.

As with any expense, make sure to account for it in your spending plan. If you don’t have a spending plan, now is a great time to get started. Remember, you are not alone and there are resources available to help you navigate childcare needs and your financial responsibilities!
