Pets and PCS
Pets and PCS
We added a precious dachshund to our family a few years ago, and it was the best decision we’ve made! However, pets can be expensive with vet visits, vaccinations, boarding, and travel expenses – especially during a PCS. Military families must also consider constant moves and the cost of moving pets as well as the size and type of pet. Some exotic pets and dog breeds are not permitted overseas or in government housing.
When we moved to Colorado from Georgia, we had to keep our dog in mind when looking for hotels along the way as well as factor in hotel pet fees that added up to several hundred dollars. We are moving overseas now and thankfully, since our dog is small, he can fly in the cabin with us. Large dogs must fly as baggage or cargo and based on my research, that can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $7,000 per pet.
Having pets in the military presents a unique circumstance, and military families must consider the added cost of taking pets with them every time they move.

Mission Response:
What a cute dog, Hoai! Pets are often a wonderful part of family life, but as Hoai points out, military families have more to consider when bringing a new furry or feathery friend home! As with any big decision, plan first and decide what you can afford and how this pet will fit into your military life and spending plan. Who will be responsible for pet care considering work and family responsibilities? Calculate purchase or adoption fees, equipment, initial and ongoing veterinary care, food, and boarding costs. Consider the PCS process and remember that not all breeds or types of pets are permitted to live in government housing on installations or overseas. Note that some overseas locations may require a quarantine period, which the Service member is financially responsible for. Make sure while traveling to your new duty station to include room in your budget for pet surcharges or fees for lodging.
