17 Smart Ways to Reduce Spending

17 Smart Ways to Reduce Spending

Save more spend lessWe would all like to find creative ways to reduce our spending, right? Maybe it means we’ll have a little extra money for that family trip, or we’ll be able to put more away for retirement. Here are 17 smart and effective ways to reduce your spending.

Consider a Spending Plan, Cutting Back

1. Make sure you have a spending plan that works for you. Knowing where your money is going can be eye-opening and help you to curb your spending.

2. Would you consider downsizing your home or selling your vehicle for a less expensive option?

3. Would it make sense — after considering all of the costs and possibly having to pay longer — to refinance your mortgage to a lower interest rate? Keep in mind, this can sometimes be a good idea, but there’s more to it than just getting a lower payment.

4. Find a less expensive phone plan, Internet or cable provider that meets your needs.

5. Sometimes we sign up for things that seems like a great deal (gym membership and subscription services), but we don’t really use them. Take a hard look and see if you find some savings.

Focus On Being Frugal

6. Consignment and re-sale shops can be great places to find gently used furniture, clothing and children’s items.

7. Sell your unused items in a garage sale or online. Does your installation have an annual garage sale? If so, check it out for deals or sell unwanted items.

8. Ask yourself if what you have can be fixed before buying a replacement.

9. Use public transportation if available.

10. Focus on paying off debts. You will incur less interest expense over time.

Look at Deals & Discount

11. Carefully examine your bills. Look for extra charges or services you did not sign up for, or no longer need.

12. Ask for a better deal. Also, you may be eligible for bundling perks on your insurance coverage or cell phone plan.

13. Speaking of deals, ask for military discounts! Many companies offer them.

14. Shop with a list and stick to it.

15. Check out your installation exchange or commissary for deals.

16. Plan your meals, take your lunch to work, and carry snacks.

17. Make a habit to buy on sale.

Remember, small changes can make a big difference over time. Stick to your budget and keep your financial goals in sight.
