As military spouses, we know firsthand how challenging it can be to stay competitive in the workforce.
Staying competitive could mean we juggle completing a degree, training or license while taking care of our families. Periodic moves followed by job searches in new locations often complicate our career goals.
Money for Professional Pursuits
Fortunately, the Department of Defense recognizes these obstacles and offers a scholarship program through MyCAA, which stands for “My Career Advancement Account.” MyCAA is administered by Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO), through Military OneSource. This program offers tools to help you achieve your professional goals.
The MyCAA scholarship provides up to $4,000 per year for spouses of active duty military members. It is a career development and employment assistance program designed to help military spouses obtain licenses, credentials or associate degrees leading to a career with transferable and portable skills.
More Than MyCAA
MyCAA is just one component of SECO’s mission. SECO also helps all military spouses with:
- Career Exploration — Career coaches help you explore your options with tools like skill and interest inventories, assessments, and earning potential data.
- Education and Training — A career coach will assist you in developing a plan to achieve your goals. MyCAA can provide financial support to get you there.
- Career Readiness — Resume writing and job interviewing are key skills your career coach will help you master. They also provide training with job search techniques and relocation planning.
Who is Eligible for MyCAA?
To be eligible for MyCAA, a military spouse must have:
- A service member on active duty in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2
- A service member in the National Guard or Reserves in the same pay grades listed above
- A high school diploma
- Approval before the active duty service member’s date of separation or release from Title 10 military orders
In summary, MyCAA can be a great tool to help you achieve your career goals!
